I am biased of course, but very proud to be part of the team that puts this awesome festival together. The question I get asked most is "what are some of the artists that I should go see?". Great question! One of my favourite things is the way a lot of groups intersect and sometimes you have to dig beneath the surface to realize a certain group is packed with superstars in their particular genre.

So in response, and before I give you my personal picks (which are eclectic), here is what you should not miss:

If you are into jazz, do not miss: Django Bates, Marius Neset, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Ernesto Cervini's Turboprop, Terence Blanchard, Hush Point, A Novel of Anomaly, Jerry Granelli, Maciej Obara.
If you are into adventurous jazz, check out: Sun of Goldfinger, A Novel of Anomaly, Dan Weiss Starebaby, Guillaume Perret, Samuel Blaser, Kimmo P{hjonen & Mary Margaret O'Hara, Peter Van Huffle's Gorilla Mask.
If you are into fun groovy music, check out: Cory Henry, Knower, Ghost Note, Banda Magda, Gogo Penguin, Shake Stew, Anomalie
Artists that do not fit into the above categories but you should check out: Mari Boine, Jerry Douglas, Don Ross

Now for my personal picks:

Petr's Picks

1. Django Bates is the real deal! A largely self-taught multi instrumentalist with a unique imagination and a stunning sense of the musical big picture. We don’t know much about Django on this side of the pond, but Django, originally from UK now residing in Copenhagen, was an important influence on certainly the UK jazz and music scene if not all of Europe. Although my favourite Django Bates recordings from the 90’s are unavailable (stuck on the defunct JMT label) there are some great examples of Django’s work available, including several releases on ECM, most recently his Beloved Trio and a recording with Anouar Brahem, Dave Holland and Jack Dejohnette. Here are some videos to check out:

2. Marius Neset is a super-talented composer and saxophonist from Norway. He is a breath of fresh air. His sensibility as both a composer and saxophonist are orchestral, fierce and innovative. Like Django, he is largely unknown in Canada and the US, but is taking Europe by storm. I think everyone should see this show!!!

3. Anomalie
I found out about this artist from my Carleton university students. Anomalie is Nicolas Dupuis, from Montreal. He is a classically trained pianist and a very talented producer, making some really fresh, informed electronic jazz music.

4. Cory Henry is an organ player from Brooklyn. Coming from a church music background, Cory is a prodigy to say the least. He got his start as a featured soloist and member of Snarky Puppy, and has since played with the Roots, Jacob Collier, been on may late night shows, and whenever he touches a keyboard and there is a phone in the vicinity to video it, that video is bound to go viral. Cory has a real honest way of playing music and technique to amaze. I think this will be an incredible show!

5. Gonzalo Rubalcaba is a Cuban pianist that I first learned of when he started working with the great, late Charlie Haden. Gonzalo's touch and note choices are heart-melting. He is one of the greatest pianists, this will be unforgettable!

6. Jerry Douglas! If any of you know me you know that I play mandolin and love bluegrass. Jerry Douglas is the most in demand dobro player out there and a member of Alison Krauss's Union Station. Jerry and Allison are of course playing on the same night however Alison is not with Union Station and Jerry is doing his own Bluegrass/jazz crossover project. I love that sound, I love what Jerry Douglas does and he always brings a killer band!

7. Kimmo Phjonen & Mary Margaret O'Hara. Mary Margaret is one of Canada's greatest treasures - a true artist all the way through. The way she performs music is by letting in the entire audience into her mind process and letting you be a part of the creative experience. She is teaming up here with Kimmo Pohjonen, an extraordinary accordionist from Finland who is a very unique and innovative artist in his own right. This pairing is a one of a kind experience.

8. Dan Weiss Starebaby. This will be pretty out but awesome!!! This is really a super band of great improvisers. Dan has a very unique voice on the drums which includes his early studies of Indian music. With Craig Taborn, Matt Mitchell, Ben Monder and Trevor Dunn, you cannot go wrong... virtuosity and imagination at its best!

9. Hush Point! Not many jazz projects are true 'bands'. Hush Point is! For years they have gotten together weekly to rehearse beautifully blurring the lines between free improv and form. From Brooklyn, these are some of my favourite and under-appreciated musicians on the scene including the great John McNeil on trumpet, Jeremy Uden on alto and C-Melody saxophones, Aryeh Kobrinsky on bass and Anthony Pinciotti on drums.

Hushpoint Music

10. A Novel of Anomaly, another group that not many people have heard of here but in Europe they are well known. This group of incredible improvisers is simply astounding. I first heard them at Jazz Ahead, a showcase in Germany and they were the highlight of the conference for me. They will be performing twice in the same night. Once on their own and later in the evening they will add two great Canadian improvisers Lina Allemano on trumpet and Andrew Downing on cello.

A reminder about a very special show coming up this Sunday!

Songs of tales is about telling musical stories. The four musicians here have been carefully chosen for the way they open up their souls and tell riveting musical stories. Rooted in songs, inspired by an orchestral sensibility and improvisation, creates an unforgettable musical experience.

Drummer Jean Martin and violinist Jesse Zubot are the magic band behind the unique sound of Tanya Tagaq. They are both irreplaceably powerful artists in their own right and also revered producers: both Jesse and Jean run their own record labels, Barnyard Records and Drip Audio respectively. Saxophonist Petr Cancura has spent the last decade in New York honing his craft with artists such as Julian Lage, Danilo Perez, Joe Morris. Cancura is clarified an ever exploring style by combining roots music with jazz sensibilities to his very own personal sound. The group is rounded out by a powerful multi-instrumentalist from Vancouver, Gord Grdina. Gord has collaborated with Jazz greats Gary Peacock and Paul Motion, avant garde masters such as Evan Parker and Colin Stetson but is also a large part of the sound of the ever-popular Dan Mangan. All these artists have an uncanny ability to see and hear the big picture in a project.

Come join us, we promise to give you our very best!
Petr Cancuratag:petrcancura.com,2005:Post/48782692017-10-05T09:20:00-04:002019-04-26T00:40:45-04:00Generation NOW at NAC on sale now!
NAC - Studio March 13th, 2018

Generation NOW with

Petr Cancura - saxophones
Michael Blake - saxophones
Rebecca Hennessy - trumpet
Marianne Trudel - piano
Remi-Jean Leblanc - bass
Greg Ritchie - drums

The creative drive that spawns unique musical voices are the lifeblood of the Canadian Jazz Scene! Generation NOW features some of today’s most important Canadian jazz musicians. This group is carefully assembled to create a band that will not only relish in great time feel, but give you, the listener, a canvas of true original canadian musical personalities. Stacked with seasoned, award winning composers and brilliant performers, Generation NOW is a snapshot of a once in a lifetime event featuring Petr Cancura and Michael Blake on woodwinds, Rebecca Hennessy on trumpet, Marianne Trudel on piano, Rémi-Jean LeBlanc on bass and Greg Ritchie on drums.

Michael Blake is one of the true great saxophonists of our time. With cult followings, Michael has a deep, soulful sound that embraces dimensions beyond the tradition - a personal style that is immediately identifiable. His voice as a composer speaks volumes and reflects influences that span the world of music and probe the imagination, with a prolific discography. Originally from Vancouver Michael is a contemporary of the great jazz musicians today and a mainstay of the New York City jazz scene.

Marianne Trudel is a true born leader, multi-talented pianist, composer, and improviser based in Montreal. At once energetic and passionate, her music crosses a wide swath of musical interests. As a performer, she pursues an active career in a variety of settings ranging from solo performance to duo, Trifolia, Marianne Trudel 4 + Ingrid Jensen, septet, and large ensembles. She has presented her music in various countries: Canada, United States, Mexico, France, Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, England, Scotland, Italy, Hungary, Lithuania, and China. Marianne Trudel also presented concerts with the Montréal Symphony Orchestra, the Quebec Symphony Orchestra, and shared the stage with artists such as Chucho Valdes, Kenny Wheeler and George Lewis.

Rebecca Hennessy, from Toronto, is emerging as one of Canada’s most unique trumpet players. Rebecca’s original project, FOG, is a New Orleans inspired brass band party with the intricacies of a modern jazz group, nominated for the Grand Prix de Jazz at the Montreal and Halifax Jazz Festivals. With significant residencies in NYC, Rebecca is a co-leader of thre chamber-jazz quartet, Hobson’s Choice and the musical director of Massey Hall’s Women’s Blues Revue. She regularly performs with The Woodshed Orchestra, Drumhand, Rita Chiarelli, as well as Viva Mexico Mariachi.

Bassist Rémi-Jean LeBlanc, born in 1984, is a Montreal bassist who has already played with some of the world’s great jazz icons such as Seamus Blake, Greg Osby and Terri Lyne Carrington, which has taken him to the far reaches of the world. He is presently a member of a variety of creative music projects in the Montreal area such as Yannick Rieu's "Spectrum", Rafael Zaldivar Cuban Revival, Jean-Nicolas Trottier Trio, l'Orchestre national de jazz, and a leader in his own right with two releases under his own name.

Greg Ritchie is a world-class drummer in every sense of the word. Now based in Montreal, Greg lived in NYC for 11 years, where he performed/recorded with David Binney, Mark Turner, Donny McCaslin, Seamus Blake, Geoffrey Keezer, David Liebman, Gilad Hekselman, Adam Rogers among others. He has performed at such notable venues as The Blue Note NYC, The Bowery Ballroom, Smalls, Montreal Jazz Festival, North Sea Jazz Festival and was the house drummer for the National Arts Center’s Crossroads project of the last two seasons.

Petr Cancura, saxophonist, mandolinist and composer lives in Ottawa. Originating in Czech Republic, Petr played with great jazz, folk and African artists with a 10 year residency in Brooklyn, New York. Petr re-established himself in Ottawa a year ago as the Artist-In-Residence of Carleton University, the Program Director of the Ottawa Jazz Festival and the Musical Director of the National Arts Center’s Crossroads Series.

Cancura’s aesthetic blends roots music and jazz to create an authentic, fresh and sound. Petr’s Down Home was nominated for a 2015 JUNO nomination for best Instrumental Album and awarded the Independent Music Award for Best Instrumental Album of the Year.
Petr Cancuratag:petrcancura.com,2005:Post/48405262017-09-07T11:44:57-04:002019-06-30T21:09:01-04:00Walkin' With Mr PC at Bar Robo this Sunday
Walkin’ With Mr PC

Inspired by the New Orleans Rock and Roll legend Lee Allen, Walkin’ With Mr. PC is like an early R&B band lead by a saxophone! Petr Cancura is an aficionado of crossing roots music and jazz, this is a hybrid of jazz and early Rock and Roll… a modern soundtrack remix of instrumental rockabilly. Cancura, known for projects such as Down Home (a mix of Mississippi and Jazz) has played with the likes of Danilo Perez, The Ghost Train Orchestra and Joe Morris.

Walkin’ With Mr. PC features

Not only do I get to play with some of my favourite musicians (Greg Ritchie, John Geggie and Roddy Ellias) but I get to work with incredible singer-songwriters. Lynne's music is very deep and different then anyone we have worked with before. There is a grounded aspect to her music which is very inspiring. Please come and check it out on January 16th at 8pm at the NAC's Studio!
Petr Cancuratag:petrcancura.com,2005:Post/44132572016-10-10T21:15:29-04:002018-03-15T04:30:07-04:00Schumann & SongwritersI am very honoured to be hosting a Schumann & Songwriters series at the National Arts Centre this and next week!

Experience the Dazzling Virtuosity of Beethoven and Schumann at the NAC Orchestra’s Festival
OTTAWA, 6 October, 2016 — From October 12 to 20, join Alexander Shelley, the NAC Orchestra, and a roster of world-renowned pianists, as they interpret the expressive and timeless masterpieces of Robert Schumann and Ludwig van Beethoven.

The two-week Festival explores superb expressions of Romanticism in the complete collection of Schumann’s Symphonies and Beethoven’s Piano Concertos. The Orchestra’s concerts are complemented by lively pre-concert conversations with Alexander Shelley, artists and journalists, as well as chamber music and and a post-concert look at Schumann’s passionate lieder.

“From Schumann’s Symphonies, expect fresh interpretations with light brushstrokes, vivid sound palettes, and sharp contrasts. From Beethoven’s Piano Concertos, expect dazzling virtuosity and passion, as each soloist brings a fresh approach,” says Music Director, Alexander Shelley.

“Schumann picked up Beethoven’s legendary symphonic mantel and made it his own, adding strains of his trademark lyricism, softening Ludwig’s Beethoven’s hammer blows with his singing romanticism and flights of poetic fantasy,” He adds.

On October 12, the Festival begins with Canada’s beloved pianist Angela Hewitt, who will interpret the work of a young Beethoven. In this performance of his First Piano Concerto, his combined respect for musical tradition and irrepressible flair for innovation will be unmistakable.

The exploration of young Beethoven continues on October 13, with a fresh interpretation of his work by renowned American pianist Jonathan Biss. This concert also features Schumann’s Symphony No.2. Initial sketches were written in December 1845, but due to Schumann’s ailing health and depression, he was only able to complete the work in October 1846. In the face of his failing health, the uplifting tone of this work can be seen as a Beethoven-like triumph over fate and pessimism.

Experience intimate chamber music on Saturday, October 15, at the National Gallery of Canada, as pianist Angela Hewitt joins NAC Orchestra concertmaster Yosuke Kawasaki and others to perform Beethoven, and both Clara and Robert Schumann.

Conrad Tao, at only 22 years old, is highly regarded worldwide as a pianist and composer. He returns to Southam Hall stage on October 16 to perform a double-header: Beethoven’s Fifth Piano Concerto and Schumann’s only Piano Concerto. This concert explores the richness of the piano and the sway it held over both Beethoven and Schumann, who were each piano virtuosos in their own right.

The concert on October 19 with soloist Saleem Ashkar, sheds light on the tumultuous emotions experienced by both composers. In his later life, Beethoven struggled with deafness, and Schumann’s health continued to ail him and he suffered with bouts of depression. The two masterpieces on this program, Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3 and Schumann’s Symphony No.3, also known as the “Rhenish”, capture times of deep emotional crisis where the composers were able to transcend their circumstances to express emotions shared by us all.

Finally, our Festival comes to a close on October 20, with the Rudolf Buchbinder, makes his debut with our Orchestra. The Austrian pianist and scholar celebrates his 70th birthday this year, and his interpretations of the works of Beethoven are the stuff of legend. This program of Beethoven’s fourth piano concerto, with its iconic solo piano opening chords, paired with Schumann’s final symphony, gives voice to the individual, being intensely subjective and driven by emotion and intuition.

Don’t miss these exceptional concerts! Join us for our engaging pre-concert talks with some of our featured soloists, who will delve deeper into these two extraordinary composers.

After each concert starting at 10 p.m. we will hold late night, post-concert music salons, and featuring brilliant Canadian singer-songwriters exploring Schumann’s lieder and its connection to song writing today.

Schumann and the Songwriters
Song writing has been with us for millennia, but Robert Schumann will always stand out as an original voice and unique craftsman. He wrote about the Romantic ideals of nature, love, and loss– universal topics which, in the right hands, become intimate and personal, no matter what century. Canadian songwriters react to interpretations of Schumann’s lieder and take us through their own creative process. With appearances by soprano Donna Brown, baritone Jean-Philippe Fortier-Lazure, and acclaimed jazz and indie-rock artists including Emilie-Claire Barlow, Jay Malinowski (formerly of Bedouin Soundclash), Charlotte Cardin, and Amanda Tosoff and Felicity Williams.

Hosted by Ottawa Jazz Fest’s Petr Cancura, with special guest Alexander Shelley.

Where: The Backstage & Le Salon
When: 10 pm
$10 ticket in advance or at the door.
Cash bar available.

October 12 – Witness Montreal’s Charlotte Cardin take to the NAC’s The Backstage to showcase her smoky, billowing voice and sleek minimalist arrangements. Find out why her jazzy R & B style is so deeply intoxicating while she discusses themes of love in her songwriting. Charlotte Cardin and Petr Cancura will be joined by soprano Donna Brown and pianist Frédéric Lacroix performing Schumann’s most beautiful love songs.

October 13 – Amanda Tosoff & Felicity Williams
Amanda Tosoff is a Toronto based pianist, composer, and bandleader who has established herself as one of the most exciting new talents on the Canadian jazz scene. Tosoff takes an adventurous leap beyond the confines of conventional jazz. Notable vocalist Felicity Williams (of such bands as Broken Social Scene, and Bahamas) accompanies Tosoff for an eclectic performance that incorporates elements of pop, art song, classical, folk and jazz. Petr Cancura will lead the duo in a discussion about the relationship between pianist and performer, and how the music illustrates text or emotion. Soprano Donna Brown and pianist Frédéric Lacroix will demonstrate this connection through Schumann lieder.

October 19 – Emilie-Claire Barlow
Two-time JUNO award-winning singer and arranger Emilie-Claire Barlow returns to the NAC this time for an intimate performance at The Backstage. Barlow has captured a loyal following worldwide, in part due to her sensitive reading of Jazz standards, her astonishing pitch and the vulnerability and warmth she brings to her music. Together with Petr Cancura, she will explore the stories behind the songs. Baritone Jean-Philippe Fortier-Lazure and pianist Frédéric Lacroix will perform some of Schumann’s most famous songs, written in the year he married Clara Wieck.

October 20 – Jay Malinowski
Join front man for the JUNO award-winning Bedouin Soundclash, Jay Malinowski for an evening featuring the best of the singer-songwriter’s solo work in the NAC’s Le Salon. Malinowski released his first solo album, Bright Lights & Bruises, in 2010 to great acclaim. He is also an accomplished author, visual artist and co-founder of Pirates Blend Records. Together with Petr Cancura, Malinowski will discuss the idea and effect of lost love in song-writing. Schumann wrote many songs which explore this theme which baritone Jean-Philippe Fortier-Lazure and pianist Frédéric Lacroix will perform.
Petr Cancuratag:petrcancura.com,2005:Post/43872492016-09-23T10:22:09-04:002016-09-23T10:22:09-04:00Apt 613 on CrossroadsApt 613 did a fantastic story on this year's Crossroads series!

http://apt613.ca/nacs-crossroads-brings-collaborators-together-across-genres/
Petr Cancuratag:petrcancura.com,2005:Post/43686702016-09-12T16:51:46-04:002018-10-04T03:48:15-04:00Sept 18th at Bar Robo: double bill Ottawa meets Vancouver!
Vancouver's Houle/Grdina/Loewen &

Kenton Loewen · drums
Kenton Loewen has been a major presence on the creative music scene in Vancouver for many years. He studied percussion at Vancouver Community College with Bernie Arai and Craig Scott, and improvisation with François Houle, before embarking on a highly successful freelance career as a first call musician for projects ranging from alternative rock to collaboration with the international creative music scene’s finest luminaries.
Kenton says “Musically and otherwise experimentation is at the heart of my life's work and I would describe myself as an improviser. That being said the pallet of colour for sound is infinite and in turn all exploration and exploitation of ones own instrument must come in to play in order to redefine the role of the musician. It's important to eradicate boundary and preconception as the musician and the listener. Music to me is the nature of being singular enough in mind and spirit to play the sound of oneself with the strength and intention of transcending even the instrument that expresses this sound, let alone the self that must relinquish. I have worked and played world wide for the better part of the last 20 years. I've toured endlessly with Submission Hold, Mother Mother, Peregrine Falls, Dan Mangan + Blacksmith, Boxcutter, The Gordon Grdina Trio and The Crackling to name a few working projects. I've worked with
Mats Gustafsson, Fredrik Ljungkvist, Mark Helias, Tony Malaby, Giorgio Magnanensi and a bunch of other geniuses to boot. It's been invaluable experience and these vibrations change everything.”

François Houle · clarinets
Clarinetist François Houle has established himself as one of today’s most inventive musicians, in all of the diverse musical spheres he embraces. His extensive touring has led to solo appearances at major festivals across Canada, the United States and Europe, and he has released more than twenty recordings, earning multiple Juno Award and West Coast Music Award nominations. Inspired by collaborations with the world’s top musical innovators, François has developed a unique improvisational language, virtuosic and rich with sonic embellishment and technical extensions. Frequently listed as a “Talent Deserving Wider Recognition” and “Rising Star” in Downbeat’s Critics’ Poll and Reader’s Poll. François studied at McGill University and Yale University. He has been an artist-in-residence at the Banff Centre for the Arts and at the Civitella Ranieri Foundation in Umbria, Italy, and was a featured soloist in the International Clarinet Association’s 2007 and 2008 ClarinetFests. He is a faculty member at the Vancouver Community College School of Music and teaches Masters and DMA clarinet students at the University of British Columbia. He served as Artistic Director of the Vancouver Creative Music Institute for five years. It’s also a fitting pairing given that Petr played on my first album when we were both just zygotes on the Ottawa music scene ... now it feels that we’ve come back full circle with a project where we bring so much more to the table.”

Kathleen’s highly decorated work frequently celebrates the many pleasures of survival and reinvention, all with a seductively quiet strength. I equally love the art of improvising in its pure and true, raw form. Down Home is a group of top level musicians and educators (Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall) that relies on improvisation and musical communication above all else to create a connection with the audience and the musicians. The workshop will focus on improvising: how to develop a vocabulary, using rhythm to improvise, the role of each instrument, and how to work with others to make music.

The first part of the workshop will split everyone into sections by instrument, and work with a member of Down Home (trumpets, trombones/vocals, woodwinds, drums, bass/guitar/piano).
The second part of the workshop will feature a master-class by Down Home as a group, during which the group will also work with some students.
